With over a decade of experience as a Gastroenterologist, I’ve had the privilege of training in both the UK and New Zealand. My journey began at UCL, where I graduated with distinction in medicine (MBBS, 2002), followed by obtaining my MRCP UK. In 2014, I completed my gastroenterology training in New Zealand, developing a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease, including published research.
Throughout my career, I’ve met thousands of patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) just like you, recognising it as a common condition that significantly impacts quality of life. It was also common to see that some of the IBD patients despite treating their disease and being in remission would still be troubled by IBS like symptoms which affected their quality of life. This experience has driven me to seek innovative ways to support and empower those struggling with IBS.
I’ve witnessed firsthand the frustration and isolation that many IBS patients experience, especially in a healthcare system strained by long waiting lists and limited consultation times. The lack of proper education and support for those diagnosed with IBS has become increasingly apparent, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. I could see the despair and frustration on patients and felt I was not doing a good enough job to educate, support and provide skills to help them manage their condition. I know a huge number of patients feel abandoned and isolated with lack of support by the system.
This in turn has increase strain on the GP’s in managing IBS, with less time and educational support, which can lead to more frustration and despair. There is lots of information out there, much of which is not evidence-based which can lead in patients feeling overwhelmed and unclear as to what works, leading to behavioural problems and significant restrictive patterns affecting people’s quality of life.
Recognising this gap in care, I’ve dedicated myself to finding effective solutions that go beyond traditional approaches. I understand the emotional burden, maladaptive thinking patterns, and avoidance behaviours that can create a vicious cycle for those living with IBS. From research studies I have found that cognitive behavioural therapy and gut-directed hypnotherapy are significantly effective in addressing lots of the issues.
To better help you, I expanded my expertise beyond traditional gastroenterology, completing an evidence-based diploma combining cognitive behavioural therapy techniques and hypnotherapy, focusing on methods proven effective in addressing IBS symptoms.
